Syllabus

Course Overview:
Emphasis on developing non-native speakers’ listening and speaking skills.  Oral skills are developed through individual presentations and conversation emphasis.  Focus is given to students’ spoken grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and exposure to North American culture. 
 Instruction in college writing skills for non-native speakers. Focuses on sentence-level writing, punctuation, and paragraph development.  Introduces students to pre-academic, experiential writing.  Trains students to develop and organize ideas in description and process modes. Progresses to five page essays. Introduces students to academic writing. Trains students to develop and organize ideas in narrative and comparison/contrast modes.
Instruction using reading material from other courses in all verb tenses (to include past, present, future in simple progressive and perfective forms), passive voice and modals, conditionals, gerunds, infinitives, and prepositions, noun clauses adjective clauses, adverb clauses, and adverbial phrases.

Assignments:
5 Essays, to be written in outline, rough draft, and final draft modes: 100 points each
Daily vocab quizzes: 10 points each
Solo Presentations: 100 points each
Oral Comprehension Tests: 100 points each

Course Outcomes:
1. Plan, write and edit a three-part essay that includes a clear beginning,
middle and end.
2. Use process techniques, including generating ideas, outlining, editing and revising.
3. Express relationships between ideas using coordination and subordination.
4. Using source materials, write a short summary or paraphrase while giving credit to that source and incorporating these ideas into an essay.
5. Be able to locate appropriate information using library and Internet resources.
6. Respond to a reading of moderate complexity (7-9th grade reading level), demonstrating comprehension and critical thinking through writing.
7. Use a variety of sentence types (simple, compound, complex).
8. Use logical connectors appropriately including conjunctions and transitions.
9. Quote and paraphrase from a secondary source.
10. Demonstrate comprehension and oral proficiency of 7—9th grade level vocabulary.
